Fraud Alert

Alert message sent 04/10/2019 22:19:00

Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

We have had a report of another scam/fraud where an individual has been cold called by BT. informing that their router may be faulty and possibly hacked to gain access to their bank account.

In this case they were instructed to download an app and then check their online account to see if any monies were missing. The line then went dead and when checking with BT was informed it was a scam and after checking with their bank it was discovered a large sum of money missing.

Unfortunately at some point many of us are likely to receive such a call and as such are strongly advised to :

Immediately put the phone down and contact your provider ( the scammers will also quote TalkTalk,Virgin etc.)

Under no circumstances download any apps or engage further with caller until you have spoken with your provider who will check your router and confirm if a scam call .

If you think you have been a victim of fraud, contact Action Fraud either by phone 0300 123 2040 or online www.actionfraud.police.uk
