Information sent on behalf of Cheshire Constabulary

Dear Cheshire Alert members,

Police would like to make you aware of a scam that is trending and coming to our attention in Warrington.

The method is that an unknown male (with an Indian accent) contacts by telephone the victim, the caller appears to be in possession of their personal details such as name, address etc. The caller states that he is from HMRC and that the victim owes tax. The caller then goes onto say that there is a warrant out for the victim's arrest and requests payment via iTunes vouchers. The caller then agrees a time to ring back and takes the ITunes voucher codes off the victim as payment. The caller calls off  a number being. 02033897373
It is highly likely that the caller is going to be from overseas and has obtained a datasheet of elderly targets, it is likely that the phone number is a VOIP line or mask number, enquiries are ongoing with BT in relation to the phone number, however it is highly likely to be untraceable.
Staff at Curry’s in Warrington state that this is happening more and more.
The elderly are particularly at risk of this scam and we would advise any of your relatives to be informed.
